The thing is that a domestic cat's claws are curved on the inside. That enables it to climb up the trunk of a tree deftly. But the claws cannot support the animal as it descends. 
 
If a person does not come to the aid of a "stuck" cat, it descends exactly forward with its tail or jumps.
